Marco Basaiti
Marco Basaiti was active in Venice during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, at one of the most important moments in the development of Venetian Renaissance painting.
His religious works belong to the artistic environment that developed around the great Venetian masters of this period.
In The Risen Christ, the figure of Christ dominates the composition, while the landscape behind him places the sacred subject within a natural setting.
From Different Historical Sources
The history of this particular painting is not yet completely reconstructed.
Information currently available to us comes from several different sources, including surviving Rudanovsky collection materials, museum-related records and modern collection databases.
These sources indicate that the painting is currently held in Yekaterinburg. There is also a well-documented historical relationship between the collections of the State Hermitage and the museum in Sverdlovsk/Yekaterinburg: after the Second World War, the Hermitage transferred a substantial group of works to the Sverdlovsk museum. However, at present we do not have sufficient documentation to establish the complete provenance of this particular painting.
The Rudanovsky Connection
The Risen Christ appears among materials associated with the historical Rudanovsky Collection.
For this reason, the work is included in the present reconstruction of the collection.
The precise circumstances of its acquisition, ownership and subsequent transfer have not yet been established from primary documentation.
The connection should therefore be regarded as part of the surviving historical record rather than a fully reconstructed provenance.
Further archival and museum research may allow this history to be clarified in the future.
